WP2: Flight simulation/training

Objective

To quantify the flying qualities and training requirements for various levels of PAV response characteristics and to build a medium to high fidelity simulation model of a likely PAV configuration.

Approach

This WP will start with developing flight simulation models of PAV concepts. The early models will be simple representations of different kinds of vehicle dynamics whilst the later models are intended to be representative of a particular PAV concept. Each of the models developed will be subjected to a handling qualities analysis using off-line tools and piloted simulation.
The initial piloted simulations will use professional pilots. However, as the automation concepts become more defined, the simulations will be expanded to include both low- and no-flight experience test subjects. The training requirements for such devices will be informed by this work and updated to include advances in the HMI and automation WPs. It is also the intention to develop simulation models of the various UAV vehicles that will be used to test autonomous control algorithms.
